Demolition Derby is the renovation catchphrase these days.

With demolition in full swing—and moving FAST—it’s hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we were putting on a show. Much has changed since then. If you’ve been following our Facebook or Instagram pages, you’ve probably seen pictures of the Green Room, dressing rooms, and Mainstage.

Over the past two weeks, they’ve transformed.

Two huge dumpsters were brought in and stationed just outside of the loading dock. Much of the first few days consisted of filling them with all of the old chairs. With pulleys and rigging equipment, Jill, Adam and their team lowered speakers and lighting instruments. The booth, as well, was emptied of all sound and light boards, monitors, cables, and spots. With the chairs gone, construction workers built false doors to block off the entrances to the Mainstage from the lobby and began tearing up the carpet. It soon became a “Hard Hat Only” zone.

Meanwhile, in the Green Room and dressing rooms, staff cleaned out everything from props, to kitchen utensils and mugs, costume racks, wigs, makeup, and fabric. As much as could be saved was saved, and the rest donated or thrown away. Even the washer, dryer, and refrigerator were moved! ACT’s lobby is packed full of items to be donated or sold.

Construction workers took over and walls came down. All interior walls of the wig room were torn apart to make a larger dressing room. Bathroom walls were demolished too, and toilets, mirrors and kitchen cabinets removed.

All hands on deck, hard hats on, tool belts fastened. Let’s do this!

Over the past week, Asheville Community Theatre’s Mainstage took a final curtain call, and while this wasn’t the closing performance of the theatre, it was the closing of a chapter - the last 70 years. For 70 years, ACT’s Mainstage was home to more than 250 shows totaling over 2,200 performances. It was a space for a community to gather - as an audience member, volunteer, or part of the cast or crew - and for a community to grow.

For many, walking in the door and sitting in their favorite gold chair or turning on the bulbs above their dressing room mirror recalls memories of milestones. First stage kisses or kisses under the alter (yes, it’s true, we’ve even held weddings here); tears of proudness over conquered stage fright; the realization that a character onstage was them and they were not alone.

The beginning of demolition brings a sense of loss that comes on expectedly, though not entirely unwelcome. A chance for reflection. To say goodbye and thank you.

This week, the chairs where parents held their children on their laps were taken out, the booth where stage managers said the words, “Stand by for the house lights to dim” was emptied, and the Green Room where casts gathered for sing-a-longs and pep talks was cleaned out from the kitchen cabinets to the call boards.

So, while we can’t take with us the divot in the floor from the dropped hammer during a late night rush to finish a set or the faded paint where a Tanglewood camper painted his masterpiece, we can take the promise that soon - very soon - we’ll get to do it all again. Act Two. Even better than Act One.

More stage kisses will happen and more tears of joy. More fear overcome and more liberation unlocked. This is theatre, and demolition week breaks ground on a world of possibilities. So, to that we say, let’s do this!

For years, we were a vagabond company, producing shows in auditoriums all over the city. But in 1972, the curtain opened for our first show in our permanent home (it was Camelot - and we still have cast members from that show who are still heavily involved at ACT!). We are grateful to those board members and community leaders who worked so hard to secure a long-lasting space for ACT, and we are thrilled to embark on a renovation to that space.

We've divided the project into three phases. Phase One is the renovation of the Mainstage auditorium, the Green Room and the dressing room spaces. Phase Two is new construction - we're planning a new black box theatre in our own backyard! Phase Three will renovate the existing Blomberg Annex (currently our costume, prop, and furniture storage) into an Education Complex.

Phase One is up first. And it begins this month! We're putting in new seating, updating lighting and sound equipment, optimizing the acoustics in the room with panels and baffles, hanging a new grid, and completely upgrading the Green Room and the dressing rooms (if you've ever been in one of our shows, you know how long we've needed this).
In the play Snowbound, Gregory's family has a long tradition of sprinkling reindeer snacks outside their door to help Santa and his reindeer find their house. Their recipe is simple - "just rolled oats and glitter." Instead of glitter, which can harm birds and wildlife if they eat it, we recommend substituting colored sugar crystals!

Here's how to make reindeer snacks:

In a small zipper food storage bag, mix:

1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal (rolled oats)

1/4 cup colored sugar crystals (as used for cake decorating)

For the first time in our 70 year history, we are producing Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece Sweeney Todd. Once we selected the title, we knew we'd need a powerhouse team to bring the show to its full potential. Cue Lenora Thom and Jerry Crouch, who describe themselves as having "a musical marriage made in heaven."

Musical Director Lenora Thom and Director Jerry Crouch at a recent rehearsal of Sweeney Todd.
Photo by Rodney Smith / Tempus Fugit Design

Over the years Jerry and Lenora's partnership has thrilled and entertained ACT audiences with hits like Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys & Dolls, Annie Get Your Gun and Cabaret. They have also collaborated on the Business Sings Broadway event. Between the two of them, they have clocked in over one hundred musical productions.

They met in 2000 when Jerry was searching for a musical director for ACT's production of The Music Man. Jerry and Lenora recently shared their memories of how they met:

"I inquired of then Asheville Symphony conductor Robert Hart Baker and the ASO marketing director Steve Hageman: "Who is a strong candidate for me to interview for this position?" Both looked at each other and replied "Lenora Thom, of course ... but she is too busy to do it!" remembered Crouch.

Lenora had just moved to Asheville from NYC, and Jerry contacted her immediately. After deciding to pool their budgets in order to hire an orchestra, they embarked on their first production together and Asheville musical history was made.

In regard to their planning strategy for a musical production, Lenora and Jerry are certainly in musical simpatico. In fact, they almost finish each other's sentences! The secret (both agree) is hitting the ground running with two solid weeks of music (under Lenora's sharp eared tutelage) – and for Sweeney Todd, this includes the nine principals and the chorus of 24. When actors are free from those music intensives, Crouch is busy staging the songs and scenes in another part of the theatre.

For Sweeney Todd, 78 actors auditioned and Jerry and Lenora selected a cast of 33. About half of the cast is new to the ACT stage, including Steve Parkin who stars as Sweeney Todd. Parkin has a background in opera and theatre and describes this as his own "bucket list dream role." Christy Montesdeoca is making her ACT musical debut as Mrs. Lovett.

"As a musical partner, Lenora's ear and her unerring judgment are peerless," said Jerry. "To quote a line from Cole Porter's "Friendship," it's the perfect blendship."

This year, Costume Drama: A Fashion Show has expanded to be both a creative event and a fundraiser for ACT. We've added a silent auction and a pre and post party to the evening ... with a jazz band, champagne, appetizers and desserts!

The silent auction items are incredible. With over $18,000 worth of amazing items to bid on - including many of the dresses you'll see in the show! - there are so many ways to support ACT while walking away with original artwork, adventure experiences, beer packages, wine tastings, jewelry and more!

Buy your tickets to Costume Drama: A Fashion Show online or call us at 828-254-1320.
The next auditions at ACT are for Not Now, Darling - and we hope we see you all again!Jenny at Asheville Community Theatrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15546092127533336590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1491506599885109402.post-32250697816336235582015-03-31T12:17:00.000-04:002015-03-31T12:17:01.309-04:00French Quarter at the Renaissance Asheville HotelOur friends and next-door neighbors at the Asheville Renaissance Hotel have come up with a great idea for dinner during the run of A Streetcar Named Desire. They've created a French Quarter inspired menu that will be available throughout the run of Streetcar. The prix fixe menu is a four course delight that begins with a gumbo and ends with beignets. And, if you make a reservation for dinner or lunch, parking at the Renaissance is free!

They're also donating $10 back from each dinner to us. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
In order to meet the deadlines of print media - and especially the monthly magazines - we need to have a photo ready sometimes only days after we have a cast. At that point, we haven't had time to build or pull costumes, the set is only a distant vision, and we're usually in production on another show at that time. So we have to do what we do best: get creative!

For A Streetcar Named Desire, we wanted to capture a bit of drama in the publicity photo. We also wanted to share a little about the relationship between Blanche and Stanley - without sharing too much. Plus, we wanted to get across that it was a period piece (Streetcar takes place in 1947) that mainly takes place inside Stella and Stanley's apartment in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Not easy without a set and costumes!

Fortunately, everyone on the creative team was game to try something new. Theatre is certainly a collaborative art - and we're grateful that the collaboration extends off the stage as well!

Here's what we did:

Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan * Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
Directed by Jerry Crouch

OPENING MUSICAL The electrifying musical adaptation of Mel Brooks' monstrously funny cult comedy film is scientifically-proven, monstrously good entertainment. Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked side-kick, Igor, and a leggy lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. "It's alive!" he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
SPRING MUSICAL "Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss's best-loved storybook characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee (and all-around mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. When the sweet, good-natured elephant Horton hears a small cry for help coming from a small speck of dust, he promises to rescue and guard it because "a person's a person, no matter how small." An incredible crazy-quilt adventure that champions the power of imagination and the benefits of inclusivity!

AMERICAN CLASSIC Snooty critic Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of the Stanleys, slips on their doorstep, breaking his hip. A tumultuous six weeks of confinement follow. The Stanley living room is monopolized by the cranky and demanding invalid; ex-convicts are invited to meals; transatlantic calls bring a $784 phone bill; and the arrival of strange gifts from his friends (penguins in the library, an octopus in the cellar) all cause further chaos and hilarious hijinks.

SUMMER MUSICAL This Tony-award winning musical was made into the Robin Williams' hit movie The Birdcage. After twenty years of un-wedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges' son announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative politician. Further complicating the situation is the 'family business': Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub where Albin is the star performer. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as "normal" when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.
PULITZER PRIZE WINNER Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, the play teems with humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters who have reunited to await news of their dying grandfather. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew their small town, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. The play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—with a telling so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.
